Dopo otto titoli mondiali consecutivi vinti dalle ragazze canadesi, con le statunitensi al posto d'onore, il mondiale 2005 ha registrato l'inversione di tendenza: titolo agli Stati Uniti e argento al Canada, ma questo soltanto ai rigori e senza che le "foglie d'acero" subissero nemmeno una rete nelle cinque partite disputate (38 reti segnate, 0 subite in 300' di gioco, ai quali si devono aggiungere anche i 20' non risolutivi dei supplementari in finale). Ai Giochi, gli USA avevano infranto per la prima volta il dominio delle rivali di sempre nell'esordio olimpico in Giappone, dove, a sorpresa, sconfissero due volte le canadesi. Quattro anni più tardi, a Salt Lake City, si era tornati alla classifica solita: primo Canada, secondo Stati Uniti. Nemmeno per la finale di Torino 2006 non ci sono dubbi: saranno ancora loro a riprendere, in parità, il duello per la supremazia nei Giochi. After eight consecutive world titles for the Canadians, with the United States finishing in the runners-up spot each time, the 2005 World Championships saw the roles reversed, with the title going to the United States and Silver to Canada. The title was decided only on penalties, however, in a tournament in which the 'maple leafs' didn't concede a single goal in five games (38 goals scored, 0 goals conceded in 300 minutes of open play, and 20 minutes of inconclusive overtime in the final). At Olympic level, the USA had broken their rivals' stranglehold on the game at the first Olympic competition in Japan, where they created an upset by defeating the Canadians twice. Four years later, in Salt Lake City, normal service was resumed: Canada first, United States second. I risultati recenti orientano il pronostico verso le svedesi, ma, se il terzo posto di Linkoping e dei Giochi 2002 sono gli atouts svedesi, ben sette medaglie di bronzo mondiali e quella olimpica di Nagano '98 dicono che la nazione guida nell'inseguimento alle nord americane è la Finlandia. Può darsi che i ripetuti e inutili tentativi di battere Canada e USA abbiano creato una certa rassegnazione nelle ragazze finlandesi, è però più probabile che l'attuale flessione dipenda di un incompleto ricambio generazionale e che, magari già a Torino, la Finlandia riprenda la leadership europea dopo i quarti posti di Salt Lake City (G.O. 2002) e Linkoping (Mondiali 2005). Going on recent form, the Swedes would appear to be favourites, but, if third place at the Linkoping World Championships and at the 2002 Games are the Swedish trump cards, then a haul of no fewer than seven World Championship bronze medals and an Olympic bronze at Nagano '98 would seem to indicate that the country leading the chase behind the North Americans is Finland. It could be that repeated failed attempts to beat Canada and the United States have left a certain resignation in the Finnish girls, but it is more probable that their current dip in form is the result of an unfinished changeover to a new generation of players, and that, maybe even in Turin, Finland will soon be ready to reclaim its European leadership after fourth place finishes in Salt Lake City (2002 Olympic Games) and at Linkoping (2005 World Championships). Tra le nazioni guida dell'hockey mondiale, proprio quelle dell'Est europeo (la Russia, ma anche Repubblica Ceca e Slovacchia) si sono distinte nel portare avanti una politica discriminatoria nei confronti dell'hockey femminile: un hockey lasciato vivacchiare ai margini, un'inutile appendice di quello rinomato e celebre dei maschi, un giocattolo. Le conseguenze del discredito non hanno tardato a manifestarsi: ultimo posto delle russe ai Campionati del 2005 e qualificazione alle Olimpiadi acciuffata con uno striminzito 3-2 sul Giappone (il pareggio avrebbe mandato a Torino le asiatiche). Tedesche e svizzere hanno, nel loro palmarès, un solo bronzo europeo a testa (la Germania nel 1989 a Dusseldorf, la Svizzera nel 1995 a Riga); ma, nella graduatoria stilata dalla IIHF per il 2005, la Germania precede, non a caso, la Russia e punta in alto. La Svizzera, invece, in chiave olimpica è all'esordio e la sua federazione ha fatto un ottimo lavoro per arrivarci. Le elvetiche hanno alle spalle una stagione portentosa: qualificazione ottenuta a Bejing, in Cina, davanti alle padrone di casa, e la promozione al gruppo di élite ottenuta in marzo ai Mondiali di prima divisione. La presenza della nazionale femminile italiana ai Giochi è un grande successo, indipendentemente dai risultati. La graduatoria mondiale assegna alle azzurre l'ultimo posto, io auguro loro che non sia così, ma, anche nal caso contrario, …last but not least, dicono dalle mie parti, e le ragazze sanno di essere state un esempio per tutti. A more unlikely success would be that of Russia, despite a silver medal at the 1996 European Championships, bronze at the 2001 World Championships, and fifth place at the 2002 Olympic Games. Among the leading nations in world hockey, it is those of Eastern Europe (Russia, but also the Czech Republic and Slovakia) who have specialised in institutional discrimination against women's hockey: the game has been left to scrape along on the margins, a useless appendage to the famous, celebrated men's game, nothing more than a toy. The consequences of this negligence were not long in coming: last place for the Russians at the 2005 World Championships, and Olympic qualification snatched at the last with a narrow 3-2 victory over Japan (a draw would have sent the Asians to Turin). In terms of medals, the Germans and Swiss have one European bronze each (Germany in 1989 in Dusseldorf, and Switzerland in 1995 in Riga); but, in the IIHF rankings for 2005, Germany, unsurprisingly, comes ahead of Russia, and is on the way up. Switzerland, on the other hand, is making its Olympic debut, and the Swiss federation has done a fine job to bring the team so far. The Swiss players certainly have an encouraging season behind them: winning qualification in Beijing, China and promotion to the élite group in March at the first division World Championships. The presence of the Italian national women's team at the Games is a great success, regardless of results. The current world rankings put the 'azzure' in last place. I hope that isn't really the case, but even if it is, …last but not least, as they say where I come from, and anyway, the girls know they have always been an example for all.
